This Time I Dance

Posted by: Jeanette Eleff on: February 9, 2010

I’m presently reading This Time I Dance by Tama J. Kieves.  Her writing style is creative, interesting and thought-provoking as she tells her story of jumping from a career as a highly paid successful lawyer to a loving life of an author, speaker and coach.

“If you’re this successful doing work do don’t love, what could you do with work you do love?” is a fabulous quote that is on the front of the book – this statement was from one of her friends as Tama was sharing her fears of making the leap into a life she really had only dreamed of. This is a great question for all of us to ask ourselves.

She writes about overcoming her fears, getting clear about what she wanted, finding her support and carving out her success tools for having the life she now really loves. I highly recommend this book for anyone contemplating jumping out-of -the-frying-pan of a job they do not like and into a beautiful and endless sea of possibilities!

Smiles and best of success in taking your own leap!

Your Vitality Project

Posted by: Jeanette Eleff on: February 8, 2010

I am starting a movement: one that includes you energizing something in your life. Remember, your life includes your business, career, relationships and anything else that adds to, influences, or changes something in your entire life.

It’s a simple formula: Energizing + something specific in your life = Success, happiness and vitality. Are you game?

In the past, I have shared this one definition of vitality that resonates for me: “….distinguishing the living from the nonliving.” Are you among the vibrant living or the in-a-rut and no creativity nonliving, a zombie?”

So, what needs energizing in your life? What is your Vitality Project?

  • More satisfaction from your career?
  • Moving on to a different job?
  • Starting a business?
  • Making more money?
  • Finding a new relationship?
  • To put yourself first?
  • Trying out a new hobby?
  • Something else?

I want to hear from you and get an idea about your Vitality Project – where you want more energy, more vitality in your life. Think big, this is the place to let it all out and to release those dreams! Please post your Vitality Project here!

To your success with your Vitality Project

Snow Project

Posted by: Jeanette Eleff on: February 6, 2010

If you have watched the news today, then you know the east coast got blasted with a nasty snow storm. I live in Frederick, Maryland, and as I write this I believe we have had over 30 inches of snow since yesterday. The snow is tapering off with the predictions of winds and drifting tonight.

Phil loves keeping the driveway shoveled, thinking he is miraculously going to be able to drive somewhere despite no snow plow activity on our road since yesterday: he gets “houseitosis” so much easier than I do. We shoveled four times yesterday and four times today – I do think there is an end in sight, but still no snow plow. We have electricity and plenty of food.

While I was shoveling snow by myself a few hours ago, I reflected how shoveling snow is so much like any big project you want to tackle:

  1. Have the proper tools - No, I did not have a snow blower but I was prepared with two pretty good shovels. We also parked both cars in the middle of the driveway, making it easier to move the snow and using the cars as a shield for the center of the driveway. When you begin any big project, pick the right tools and be prepared.
  2. Prepare yourself - I actually like shoveling snow because it is good abdominal exercise if done correctly. No back straining for me. I am prepared for it because I exercise regularly and my Pilates routine reminds me to keep my core tight. Big projects can require you to be personally prepared; education, asking for help, investing in yourself, a supporting mindset.
  3. Take one step at a time - This afternoon when I saw the three-foot drift in the driveway that I had to tackle, I began to get a little overwhelmed. But I found that if I attacked the drift one shovel full at a time the shoveling became more satisfying and I felt some progress was being made. I eventually conquered the snow drift. When faced with any project we can quickly become overwhelmed if we think of this huge thing before us. Break your project down into manageable steps and it really does become easier to begin and easier to finish.
  4. Be realistic about your goal – The best way to get a back strain or a heart attack while shoveling snow is to put too much of that wet stuff on your shovel at once. I was realistic in how much snow my body and breath could tolerate on that shovel. I took my one-shovel full-at-a-time approach and did what I knew I could, avoiding high expectations of getting that driveway shoveled in fifteen minutes! You can become easily frustrated with any project if you set unrealistic expectations for yourself and others. Be real.
  5. Enjoy it and have fun! – I love being outside and being outside during a snow storm with the shovel is no exception. I get to enjoy the beauty of snow and breath in that glorious fresh air. The puppies get to romp in the driveway for a few minutes and I get to wave at the neighbors. I try to live by the motto “It it’s not fun, then why are you doing it?” I believe you can have fun and enjoy practically any type of project. Remember, even if you change your attitude about something it can make it more enjoyable. Find ways to have fun with your project.
  6. Celebrate your accomplishment – We now have the best looking shoveled-out  driveway on our street. That is until the snow plow finally arrives, then it’s grab the shovel time. I admit, I feel proud about being part of clearing the snow, of making a way for Phil to finally escape, of not having to do this tomorrow. I celebrated with a smile on my face and a nice cup of flavored coffee – the apple pie was good too. Sorry Sandie, I know I am counting my portions! Celebrating your accomplishments, no matter how small, brings that big sense of joy to you. That feeling of “Hey, I am good!” Build in time for celebrations during your next big project.

I think the snow has stopped. Perhaps it is time for another celebration ritual – soaking in the bathtub!

Smiles,

Jeanette

Taking Care of Me!

Posted by: Jeanette Eleff on: January 25, 2010

This past Saturday I had the fortunate experience of being a member of my friend Sandie’s pilot program for her new company ATP – Attain Top Performance. Sandie is a beautiful and fit dietitian/nutritionist and personal trainer whose dream is to one day leave her full-time career and pursue her own business in helping people attain their top performance through sensible exercise and healthy eating – no fads here! I feel so privileged to be a part of this 14-member pilot group – a dynamic group of women all wanting to achieve better health for a variety of reasons. We are all so grateful that Sandie was “put in front of us” so we could reach our goals!

For me, I am making the big commitment for better health. Yes, I do ride my bike thousands of miles each year. Yes, I workout at my gym. Yes, I don’t look like I am THAT overweight. But, I am inconsistent – and the holiday eating got the better of me. I can no longer eat the way I have always eaten – mindless with large portions. The weight does not come off as easy as it used to thanks to the old menopause sinking in. Ah, I have to admit, that in a year and a half I will reach the big 6-0, and my goal is to be fit and strong and healthy. For if I am not, I cannot do all of the fabulous living that I plan on doing. I know I can create the life I want!

So, here I am – taking care of me! Sandie opened the door to my love for healthy eating and exercise. I am back on track. I have already lost 8 pounds over the last two weeks and more to go.

I am also very impressed by the entrepreneurial spirit of Sandie. She wants to see everyone succeed, and with the power of her energy they will! Talk about vitality.

Smiles to you

Add Some Vitality to Your Career

Posted by: Jeanette Eleff on: January 25, 2010

Having vitality in all areas of your life is more than just drinking that special tomato juice! Having a career filled with vitality means that you enjoy your work, you are energized, you effectively face conflicts, and you feel productive and creative. You may think it is impossible to have all of these things in a career, but I have seen my clients become happier and more vitalized when they make the changes that they realize they can make. Here are five vitality-attributes that you can add to your career:

Smile – How can you have a bad day when you are smiling? I once heard that it takes more facial muscles to frown than it does to smile. When I smile, it transmits something to my entire body that makes me automatically feel better about a situation. In addition, your smile, just at the right time, can produce a great day for someone else. Just imagine our workplaces and our world if everyone wore more genuine smiles. My mother always told me to smile because it made me look better!

A Positive Mindset – You always have the choice to change your mind. Your mindset, or perception about a person, place or thing is very powerful. With the law of attraction, energy flows where your attention goes. Therefore, if your perception of your career is boring, conflicting, or not fun, guess what happens? You will actually attract more situations that are boring, conflicting and not fun. Focus on the positive: My career is stimulating; My career is helping me afford the things I want in my life; or My career is a stepping stone to something greater.

Communicate – Sometimes we don’t have vitality in our careers because there are things that are bothering us about the organization or other people. We harbor feelings of discontent that begin to grow and feed our Inner Zombies. (see last weeks’ newsletter!) According to Margaret Wheatley in her book Turning to One Another, we can begin change by starting a conversation. I am not talking about complaining. I mean having an assertive, direct, open, and honest conversation with someone you have a conflict with, or someone who is in a position to make the change. It’s about honoring your feelings and getting something “off of your chest”. I feel so much better when I have an open and honest conversation with someone. Yes, I can feel nervous and anxious before I speak with them, but when I change my mindset to one of This conversation is going to make me feel better, I allow my true voice to be heard.

Get Out in Nature - Vitality is all about being energized and alive and there is no better vitality-recharger than nature. The nice thing about nature is that we all have access to it. Breathing in the fresh air, observing the colors, and watching the connection of all things outside is very inspiring and stress-relieving. I have always found that even a 10-minute walk outside will give me a new perspective and recharge me. If you want to be energized on a bigger level, go on a hike in the woods and enjoy the sights and sounds!

Daily Quiet Time – Being in silence with ourselves is so important to our vitality. It is another way to recharge, to connect with your source, and to become inspired. You can refer to this as meditation, prayer, relaxation, or even a “cat nap”. Whatever you call it, do it at least once a day.

If you are committed to it, you can create a vitality-filled career. Pick one attribute and begin incorporating it into your life today and watch for your vitality to flourish.

Happy Day

Are You Feeding Your Inner Zombie?

Posted by: Jeanette Eleff on: January 22, 2010

Another Way to Look at Your Inner Zombie

I have started to use a new phrase, your Inner Zombie, as a name for that “thing” inside you that keeps you stuck in a rut, fills your head with negative voices, and prevents you from the true success you desire. Can you relate to this?

Why Inner Zombie? I love the word vitality. My business is called Focused Vitality because I love the meaning of vitality; energy and aliveness for your career, business, and thus your life. One definition of vitality is “…distinguishing the living from the nonliving.” Nonliving? When I think of nonliving I immediately think of the 1968 movie Night of the Living Dead by George Romano and… zombies! By the end of the movie, the zombies are defeated. It is not always easy to defeat our Inner Zombie, especially if we are feeding them! Here are several ways you may be uncon sciously feeding your Inner Zombie:

Not having a clear idea or goals of what you want – When you do not know where we are going it is easy to get distracted. Take some quality quiet time to decide and write down what you want.

Not saying no often enough – You need to say no to the things that do not support your vision of success. Remember, you only have 24 hours in a day. How are you spending them? Say yes only to the things that require your unique brilliance!

Not putting yourself first – When you don’t take great care of yourself, you can’t provide any true quality to anyone or anything else. Remember, “Put your oxygen mask on first!”

Not identifying and facing your fears – Fear is the number one thing that keeps us from success, happiness and reaching any other goal we have for ourselves. Fear of the unknown, fear of failure, fear of too much success, or fear of it being too hard. You can have a fear, but still do it anyway!

Not making up your mind to do what you want – Our mind is a beautiful and creative thing that supports us in making choices. You can choose to think of something as an inconvenience, or you can choose to think of the same thing as an adventure to be overcome while you are having fun!

Be proactive in defeating your Inner Zombie by not feeding them. When you do hear their voices, which may get louder as you make wonderful changes in your life, just tell them to go away! It’s that simple – if you make up your mind that it is going to be!

To your success!

Defeat Your Inner Zombie

Posted by: Jeanette Eleff on: January 20, 2010

Today I took a risk. I told people about the feared “Inner Zombie” that lies dormant in all of us. I provided this fact during my bimonthly Carroll Creek Toastmasters Club meeting, where I was a speaker.

I shared the big secret of life: to have more vitality in one’s life, career, and business. I love one of the definitions of vitality: ….”Distinguishing the living from the nonliving.” When I think of the nonliving, I think of the 1968 film by George Romero, “Night of the Living Dead” and zombies!

When we live our lives or engage in our careers as one of the “nonliving”, our Inner Zombie takes over and we:

  • Are not happy
  • Do not achieve success
  • Fall into ruts
  • Feel helpless
  • Go along with the crowd
  • Live with our fears
  • Feel drained

Get the idea? Do any of these sound familiar?

Like any good zombie movie, the zombies are always defeated in the end. How do you defeat your inner zombie when you feel it is rearing its ugly head? By following these steps:

  1. Get very clear about your personal definition of vitality for your life, business or career. What would it be like if you were REALLY living?
  2. Brainstorm actions you need to take to reach this level of vitality. Pick one to begin immediately.
  3. Ask for support and invest in yourself.
  4. Ward off the voices of the inner zombie as they begin to balk at your changes; ignore them, do the opposite, or tell them to go away.
  5. Develop a structure to remind yourself of your desire to live with vitality; carry the word vitality in your pocket, have a picture that represents vitality on your desk, or find another symbol that reminds you of vitality.

You can create your vitality-filled life. You can defeat your inner zombie. You can have success, happiness and spunk!

By the way, I was voted Best Speaker today. I not only acted out my inner zombie, but I conquered her!

Happy Day!

Posted by: Jeanette Eleff on: January 15, 2010

I’m excited about my upcoming Vitality Success Circle Coaching Club, which begins January 21.

  1. Not asking for help
  2. Isolating themselves
  3. Not investing in themselves

WHAT YOU GET AS A MEMBER

As a member of the Vitality Success Circle Coaching Club you will avoid these pitfalls because this is a fantastic way to invest in yourself and receive support, education, and coaching.

  • Define your personal vitality and get clear about your vision for your life
  • Create your system to stay organized to reach your goals
  • Face your fears and make friends with your courage

HOW IT WORKS

  • March 18, 2010
  • April 1, 2010
  • April 15, 2010
  • April 29, 2010

One of the definitions of Vitality includes:”distinguishing the living from the unliving.”  That word unliving always reminds me of Zombies – someone who just goes along with the crowd, or who just goes along with their life, stuck in a rut, or wishing for something different.
